The United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA) is intensifying its efforts to combat cryptocurrency-related crimes by bolstering its digital assets investigation team. The agency aims to hire four experienced senior investigators for its Complex Financial Crimes Team, focusing on crypto-related offenses committed by organized groups.

Role and Responsibilities

The role entails probing intricate cases of high-level crypto fraud, money laundering, and other blockchain-based criminal activities carried out by organized crime syndicates. These investigators will collaborate closely with a surveillance team and London’s police force, enhancing the collective effort against digital financial crimes.

Successful candidates will work in coordination with fellow investigators, as well as members of intelligence and analysis teams. Their task involves constructing intricate cases by synthesizing data and evidence from diverse sources. This collaborative approach aims to build strong legal cases against offenders engaging in illicit crypto activities.

Requirements and Compensation

Applicants must possess a current or active Professionalising Investigation Program Level 2 accreditation, or an equivalent government-issued qualification in investigative crime. The offered salary ranges from £34,672 to £38,314 ($44,145 to $48,782.92), accompanied by additional civil service benefits.

The NCA has displayed an increasing commitment to tackling illicit cryptocurrency activities. In early January, the agency introduced its digital assets team, reflecting a heightened focus on crypto assets. The unit’s creation was prompted by the surge in losses due to crypto fraud in the UK during 2022. The country’s cybercrime and fraud reporting system disclosed that crypto scammers absconded with at least $287 million in the same year.

Expanding the Crypto Team

The NCA is steadfastly dedicated to augmenting the resources of its crypto investigation unit. On July 26, the agency announced its search for financial investigations managers. These managers will oversee crypto and digital assets crime inquiries from a Proceeds of Crime Act perspective, aligning with the goal of confiscating and redirecting illicitly acquired funds for the betterment of the community.

As the NCA reinforces its digital assets investigation team and forms strategic collaborations, its efforts are poised to make significant strides in curbing cryptocurrency-related crimes in the United Kingdom.
