Ladan Stewart, a prominent figure within the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)’s crypto unit, has made a significant career move, departing the agency to join the esteemed law firm White & Case. The announcement, made by the firm on Wednesday, marks a notable transition within the regulatory and legal landscape of the cryptocurrency industry.

Leadership at SEC’s Crypto Unit

Stewart, with eight years of experience at the SEC, had been leading the agency’s crypto and cyber litigation unit since September 2022. Under her leadership, the unit spearheaded notable legal actions, including a lawsuit against Coinbase Global Inc. for alleged unregistered securities activities.

Stewart also played a pivotal role in the SEC’s ongoing legal battle with Ripple, particularly concerning the classification of its XRP token. Despite a federal judge ruling in favor of Ripple, deeming XRP not a security when sold to the public, the SEC has moved to appeal the decision, reflecting the regulatory ambiguity surrounding digital tokens.

White & Case Appointment

Stewart’s transition to White & Case sees her joining the firm’s white-collar defense group as a partner. She intends to leverage her expertise to establish a robust crypto and cyber defense practice within the firm, emphasizing the enduring importance of addressing legal complexities in the rapidly evolving crypto landscape.

Firm’s Recognition and Financial Performance

White & Case, a prominent US law firm with a global presence, boasts a substantial roster of clients, including major entities like Microsoft and Abbvie Inc. Despite a slight decline in gross revenue in 2022, the firm remains a formidable player in the legal industry, with significant resources to support Stewart’s endeavors.

Acknowledgment of Stewart’s Expertise

Joel Cohen, leader of White & Case’s white-collar group, lauded Stewart’s experience, highlighting its relevance in light of increased regulatory scrutiny of the crypto industry. Stewart’s arrival at the firm underscores its commitment to providing top-tier legal services amidst evolving regulatory landscapes.

Corporate Practice Expansions

Alongside Stewart, White & Case welcomes John Cahill to its New York office. Cahill, a seasoned corporate real estate lawyer, brings extensive experience in US and Asian markets, complementing the firm’s corporate practice. His addition follows recent hires, indicating White & Case’s strategic focus on strengthening its corporate capabilities.
