As interest in tokenized assets continues to rise across Europe, crypto exchange Gemini has made a bold move by launching a tokenized version of Michael Saylor’s company MicroStrategy (MSTR) stock. This launch is exclusive to European Union (EU) investors and marks Gemini’s first foray into onchain tokenized equities, with more stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on the way.

What Is Tokenized Stock Trading?

Tokenized stocks are digital versions of real-world stocks, represented on a blockchain. Each token reflects the price and performance of the underlying stock, in this case, MicroStrategy (MSTR), the company led by well-known Bitcoin bull Michael Saylor.

These tokenized versions aim to make investing faster, cheaper, and more accessible, especially for those outside the US who face barriers like high fees, restricted access, or time-zone-related trading hours.

According to Gemini, “Tokenized stocks solve this problem by giving investors greater access with fewer restrictions.” Unlike traditional markets that operate only during business hours, tokenized stocks can be traded 24/7, offering global access to US equities in a new, more flexible format.

Gemini Teams Up with Dinari for Tokenization

To make this offering possible, Gemini partnered with Dinari, a US-based public securities provider known for its tokenization-on-demand model. This model ensures that each digital token is backed 1:1 by the actual stock it represents, giving investors the same economic rights as traditional shareholders, where permitted by regulation.

In simple terms, when you buy a tokenized MSTR stock through Gemini, you’re essentially buying a digital twin of the real stock, with the same value and rights attached.

Gemini said the partnership helps deliver “greater liquidity, transparency, and ease of access” for users, especially those wanting to hold both crypto and stocks on the same platform without switching apps or selling one asset to buy another.

Why Start with MicroStrategy (MSTR)?

MicroStrategy is no random choice. It is the biggest publicly listed corporate holder of Bitcoin, with billions of dollars’ worth on its balance sheet. Its stock price tends to mirror Bitcoin’s movement, making it a favourite among crypto-focused investors.

The stock is also gaining momentum. MSTR is currently trading at $383.88, up 3.84% over the past 30 days, according to Google Finance.

Financial analyst Jeff Walton even suggested that MSTR has a strong chance of entering the S&P 500 index as long as Bitcoin doesn’t drop below $95,240 before the end of Q2. That potential inclusion adds even more appeal to the tokenized version now available via Gemini.

Tokenized Equities Gaining Momentum Across Europe

Gemini isn’t alone in this trend. Interest in tokenized US equities is rapidly growing in Europe, where regulation is friendlier toward this type of innovation.

Here’s a quick snapshot of the growing ecosystem:

  • Robinhood is building a blockchain network to offer US securities trading for European retail users.

  • Kraken announced plans to offer tokenized US stocks to non-US customers.

  • Coinbase is working to gain approval from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to launch tokenized equities within the US.

Crypto leaders believe this could lead to a trillion-dollar market, with Arnab Naskar, CEO of STOKR, noting the massive potential despite regulatory uncertainty.

What’s Next?

While MSTR is the only tokenized stock currently available on Gemini, the exchange has confirmed that more tokenized stocks and ETFs will roll out “in the coming days.”

This launch is a first step toward merging traditional finance with blockchain allowing users to invest in real-world stocks, but with the speed, flexibility, and global access that crypto offers.

For now, European investors are the ones benefitting from this innovation. As regulatory clarity improves, especially in the US, expect tokenized stock trading to go mainstream and Gemini is clearly positioning itself at the forefront of this transformation.
