In a major breakthrough, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) Kraken operation led to the arrest of Jay Je Yoon Jung from New South Wales on 17 September, after uncovering his involvement in a sophisticated crime syndicate. The investigation, which included accessing the criminal app Ghost, revealed a broader network leading to the seizure of $6.4 million in cryptocurrency, drugs, and weapons.

Crime Syndicate Exposed

Jung’s arrest was the result of a collaborative effort by the AFP-led Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce (CACT), which included agencies like the Australian Taxation Office, AUSTRAC, and the Australian Border Force. Following the discovery of his digital wallet linked to Ghost, authorities were able to trace and seize significant assets connected to illegal activities.

In addition to the cryptocurrency, law enforcement arrested 46 other individuals associated with the crime syndicate. The operation resulted in 93 search warrants and the confiscation of $1.6 million in cash and 30 illegal weapons. Authorities also prevented the distribution of 200 kilograms of drugs, dealing a major blow to the syndicate’s operations.

Advanced Investigative Techniques

Key to the operation’s success was the AFP’s ability to decipher Jung’s digital wallet “seed phrase” from devices seized during a search of his Narwee residence. This allowed the confiscation of the cryptocurrency assets, showcasing the technical capabilities of the AFP and its partners.

Acting Commander Raven praised the operation’s success, stating: “Whether you have tried to hide them in real estate, cryptocurrency or cash, we will identify your ill-gotten goods and take them away from you.” The seizure of these assets significantly disrupts the financial infrastructure of the criminal network.
